Periodontal Treatment near Marco Island (Naples)
|
Periodontal disease is caused by leaving gingivitis (gum disease) untreated. This common disease affects the bone around the tooth but can be easily prevented. An obvious sign of gingivitis is if the gums pull away from the teeth and expose root. It could be less severe symptoms thought such as gums that are swollen and bleeding or even bad breath. If the disease has not progressed too far, then it can be remedied by cleaning the area under the gums. This removes the inflamed tissue and plaque getting rid of the bacteria that is irritating the gums and allowing it to reattach to your teeth. |
Benefits |
Prevention of the loss of teeth is the biggest benefit. If nothing is done to combat this disease, it could become so bad that all the teeth could fall out or have to be extracted. Obviously to lose a tooth will change the way you look, but it is not only about looks. An expensive procedure that could involve implants or dentures might be necessary. Who needs that type of hassle when it could be so easily prevented?

Who |
If your gums are inflamed or bloody, see your dentist immediately. If it has progressed far enough that your gums are eroding and the root is being exposed, there is no time to lose. Soreness and halitosis can also be signs of infection and you should be treated as soon as possible. Loose teeth could mean that advanced bone loss has occurred and this can be caused by bacteria pockets that have made a home under your gums. All of these conditions are not to be taken lightly.

Types |
When the normal procedures are not curing the problem, a gingivectomy may be needed. This is a surgery that will take out the areas affected. Localized anesthesia will keep you from feeling pain and the wound will be dressed after to help it heal.
If left untreated, you may also need a gingivoplasty to take away the tissue. It will be lifted off the teeth to allow removal of inflamed areas and bacteria. After this the dentist can reconstruct bone and gum where necessary. You may need to take antibiotics so that no further infection takes place. |
Recommendations |
See your dentist often. Don't forget to brush your teeth morning, noon and night and floss too. Cleanings should be done on a regular basis. But the biggest recommendation we can give is never put off periodontal treatment if you have been told that you need it. Why wait when you may lose some or all of your teeth? It is not worth it.
