Fillings
(Dentist Services Available In Naples By For Smiles Dentists)

Fillings are exactly what the name suggests, a substance that fills a crack or hole in a tooth. Decay causes these little holes and the dentist can see this day with X-Rays. Also, he can check each tooth by probing them with his instruments. Decay should be combated immediately so that it does not compound. If dealt with when it begins, then no further issues should arise and decay can be stopped in its tracks.

Uses

As stated above, fillings fill holes formed by decay of the tooth. The material that is used depends on the location of the decay. If it is in the front, then there is more concern for the look and color of the filling as it will be seen regularly. It will look very natural and no one should be able to tell one has been applied. If it is in the back of the mouth, this is not as much of a concern.

Although they last for quite some time, old fillings need to be redone occasionally. Especially if decay is found underneath a filling. That must be addressed immediately to ensure that the patient does not lose the tooth to the decay.

Who

People get cavities; it is a fact of life. If you have one, then a filling will more than likely be your choice to fix it. Larger holes will of course be subject to crowns. Fillings should be checked regularly during your visits to make sure they are not coming loose and need to be redone.

Procedure

We are usually able to perform fillings with the aid of a local anesthetic. As always, we look out for the fears of our patients and if necessary can use nitrous oxide, which is commonly referred to as laughing gas. Children often need this as they are unable to understand the procedures that will be taking place and find it very scary to be at the dentist. Decay will be removed from the tooth to allow the filling to be applied. After that, life can return to normal.

After

A smile should come naturally after the procedure. The mouth should look and feel great, but in some instances you may notice that something is off. Call and make an appointment as soon as possible so that you won't have to deal with this longer than necessary. Smile confidently with your decay free teeth!

What to Expect

The anesthesia will numb the area and we suggest that you don't try to eat because you may bit the inside of your mouth or your tongue and not even realize that you have done this. For the same reason, do not inject very hot or cold drinks to avoid hurting yourself. When that numb feeling is gone, life will return to completely normal. Take care of your teeth so this does not happen again by brushing your teeth morning, noon and night. Flossing every day will get rid of particles that are breeding grounds for bacteria and go to see your dentist at least every 6 months.
